BEGINNERS EP set for release in the UK on 24th March, 2014
First track ‘Who Knows’ available for free download now –
BEGINNERS was born in L.A.’s Wiltern Theater where, after years apart, Samantha Barbera and Nick Ruth reunited to support their former Malbec drummer in Foster the People. It was that night that Barbera, songwriter and singer/bassist in hardcore punk band Holy Fever, and Ruth who had been producing artists, including Mikky Ekko and Active Child, became inspired to work together again.
What started as a bedroom writing experiment, developed into BEGINNERS by the end of the first night. “Within an hour of writing, we knew we were onto something,” Barbera explains. “In just a few months, we ended up writing, recording and mixing an entire record. All in Nick’s house.”
BEGINNERS delivers well-crafted elements of garage rock with dark electronic pop hooks that fans of Santigold, Cults, Phantogram, Tegan and Sara, and Chromatics will be sure to appreciate. Barbera’s attitude-tinged vocals carry the intensity and passion of an artist like Karen O, while Ruth’s production captures a moody landscape fit for Depeche Mode’s ‘Violator’.
The BEGINNERS EP is mesmerizing and far from predictable. The gigantic hooks of ‘Who Knows’ give way to uncomfortably honest lyricism in ‘Let Go or Get Dragged’ leaving you dancing your way through a movie you shouldn’t be allowed to watch, but can’t look away from. Swampy, bluesy verses on ‘So Close I Almost Believed It’ unexpectedly combine with a power ballad chorus straight out of an 80s John Hughes movie, before descending into an extended outro that could make Johnny Marr blush. And lest one think she has forsaken her roots, Barbera proves otherwise when the raw garage riffs of ‘Ever Love’ come alive onstage, where she is backed by Holy Fever bandmate, Neeraj Kane (The Hope Conspiracy), and drummer, Jason Walker (The Gamits).
The debut BEGINNERS EP will be released on March 24th, 2014. Tour dates to follow.

THE MENZINGERS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM
PLUS SPECIAL ONE-OFF DATE AT THE OLD BLUE LAST IN LONDON ON 30th APRIL
‘Rented World’ out 21st April on Epitaph
Video for ‘In Remission’ Online now: http://youtu.be/iZscWmIizzw
Philadelphia-based band The Menzingers will release their new album Rented World on 21st April in the UK via Epitaph Records. Rented World is the fourth studio release for the band and the follow-up to their critically-applauded album On The Impossible Past, which made it to the upper echelons of many an end of year list in 2012, being named Album of The Year in Rock Sound.
Listen to a new track off Rented World and watch the video for ‘In Remission’ which premiered on NOISEY: http://noisey.vice.com/blog/the-menzingers-in-remission-song-rented-world-stream
‘In Remission’ is the first track from the new album, and one where the band observes, “Maybe the future’s just a little bit weird”; a statement that sets the tone of Rented World.
Returning to the site of their first ever London show, The Menzingers have also announced a special one-off date at the Old Blue Last in London on 30th April to celebrate the release of Rented World. 100 tickets for the event will go on sale this Thursday 20th February at www.banquetrecords.com as part of a pre-order bundle with the album. On Friday 21st February, the remaining tickets go on sale, also via Banquet, with no album pre-order needed.
To record Rented World, The Menzingers entered Miner Street Studio in Fishtown, Philly for the first time in autumn 2013. Jonathan Low, whose rich Americana influences can be heard on his work with The National, Sharon Van Etten, and Kurt Vile was enlisted to engineer the album. When writing the new material, the band recognized the shifts in their craft, shifts they knew would best be handled by Low. “We wanted to go to somebody who wasn’t used to recording punk records, though it wasn’t in a pretentious way, like we wanted to become an indie rock band,” stated Tom May (guitar / vocals).
The end result is an album that fearlessly collides the snarl of emo with grungy, 90s grit whilst also exploring the celestial expanse of post-rock. Lyrically, it focuses on matters that any red blooded human also contending with their mid-20s can relate to.
The Rust Belt punks are in a crucial period of growth. Greg Barnett (guitar/vocals), Tom May (guitar/vocals), Eric Keen (bass), and Joe Godino (drums), seek a greater wisdom in life, even if they are old enough to know better. This is a theme that resonates strongly throughout the album.
“Things start to feel a little more serious,” says May. “When we were younger we wrote fiery songs because at that age it’s your world view. Now I look at the world and think ‘well, maybe I’m not right all the time.’”

Brooklyn singer/songwriter Alexz Johnson hits the UK and Ireland over the next ten days, just prior to the release of new EP HEART, which is produced by Grammy Award-winner David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Strokes, Stevie Nicks) which will be released on 17th February. New single ‘American Dreamer’ was recently premiered on NYLON via lyric video here: http://bit.ly/1hloEmd.
With a unique soulful folk-pop sound and passionate songwriting style, its no wonder Alexz Johnson has been called a modern day Stevie Nicks with the power of Bruce Springsteen and vocal soul of Adele. Her talents are taking her to places she never dreamed possible including the iminent Winter European Tour supporting Ron Pope and Wakey! Wakey! For more information, please visit:alexzjohnson.com.
When asked about the upcoming EP, Alexz stated, “HEART EP represents a new chapter in my life. Through heartache comes growth and strength. I can’t help but share my personal experiences through my writing and though that can be vulnerable, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Johnson’s success in TV and film as young adult (Instant Star, So Weird, Final Destination 3) not only landed her a Gemini Award (Canadian Emmy) in 2008, but also helped her garner a massive grassroots fan-following, supporting her loyally across the country this past Fall selling out her national club tour. Without the support of a label, her fans have financed many of her musical endeavors, most recently raising over $50,000 on PledgeMusic to help Alexz produce her forthcoming EP, HEART. Alexz’s songs have been featured in the likes of Instant Star, Degrassi (including the theme song for season 11), Pretty Little Liars, and The L.A. Complex.
Born and raised in Canada, the middle child of nine siblings, Alexz began writing songs with her brother Brendan at the age of 12. After writing for and portraying musicians in multiple Canadian films and TV shows, Alexz began to experiment with her own unique pop/soul sound. This attracted the attention of major labels, signing first to Capitol Records in 2005 and Epic/Sony in 2008 (completing a full length record with legendary producer Greg Wells). Due to internal changes, the album never got its proper release.
In the absence of traditional support, Alexz has continued to build a strong following in an independent market. Deciding to release her Skipping Stone EP through Kickstarter, over $67,000 was raised overall allowing her to tour 17 cities with her band across the US and Canada.
Alexz Johnson will release HEART on February 17th.

IDIOM SET TO GIVE AWAY A SERIES OF EPs THROUGH METAL HAMMER MAGAZINE THROUGHOUT 2014
FIRST RELEASE NOW STREAMING IN FULL
Tour dates in Feb / March
Exeter metal band Idiom is to break the traditional label cycle and give away their music through 2014 with Metal Hammer magazine on not one, but for the first time a series of three separate cover-mounts ahead of their first album release. They will also be playing various live dates through February and March which will be the first opportunities to see the new material in the live sphere.
“’Movement’ is about constantly striving for what you want and dream,” says Idiom guitarist Kris Gibbz of the first EP which is in stores now with the latest issue of Metal Hammer and can be streamed online here with a free download set to follow in March. “Each song has its own journey and meaning to all of us but we’ve been the same four members for the whole of Idiom’s existence and we’re closer than ever. This is just the beginning of that movement.”
“We wanna give it away for free with Metal Hammer cause it’s probably the most open minded metal audience that would relate to what we’re trying to do,” continues singer Matt Sharland. “We just want to play to as many people having a great time as possible, and this is a great way of doing it and we can’t thank Metal Hammer enough for helping us and other musicians to get out there and play new music.”
Metal Hammer editor, Alex Milas, had the following to say of their partnership with the band:
“Idiom represent the best of what’s an already thrilling new generation of metal bands who face steep challenges in getting their music to potential fans, which is where we come in. We’re asking our readers to Play It, Rip It and Share It!”
